Cuckoo takes a stand for UK consumers
While the bigger broadband providers continue to justify their recent price hikes, the AltNets are calling for prices to remain affordable. And few have been as vocal as Cuckoo, one of the UK’s most socially responsible broadband providers. The firm donates a percentage of its profits to charities in the UK and those working in developing communities all across the world.
In a blog posted on the firm’s website, Cuckoo co-founder and CEO Alex Fitzgerald demanded that broadband exit fees and above-inflation price rises should be scrapped for all UK customers facing the current cost of living crisis.
“It’s time for established providers, government, and regulators to do the right thing,” wrote Alex.
“Most broadband customers are tied into long contracts. Many won’t have read the small print properly and won’t realise they face an annual increase tied to the Consumer Prices Index with another four per cent whacked on top.”
“Then, when they realise and try to leave for a better deal, customers run into the brick wall of exit fees. These can be hundreds of pounds. Broadband firms use opaque methods to calculate the fees – meaning customers aren’t sure how much they could have to fork out. Practices like these are dishonest and unfair; they need to end immediately.”
CityFibre owns up and then promises to do better
CityFibre, one of the UK’s biggest AltNet providers, has assured the residents of Reading that the traffic congestion caused by the installation of its superfast broadband network is only temporary.
The company came under (some very rare) criticism after its works led to gridlocked roads and backed-up traffic, creating what some locals called an “unacceptable knock-on effect on our lives and livelihoods.”
CityFibre Directors are meeting with the Reading council to explain the disruption and outline a speedy resolution.
In the meantime, the firm issued this statement:
“We want to reassure residents that we are doing everything possible to manage disruption, and we thank you all for your patience. And we firmly believe that the long-term benefits of CityFibre networks will massively outweigh these unfortunate short-term disruptions. This has been a learning experience and we’ll use it to improve future project delivery times.”
A new full fibre rollout record
Independent broadband provider YouFibre has set a new UK record for the fastest ever full fibre network rollout. The connection went live just 22 days after the firm announced a build in Tewkesbury town, Gloucestershire.
Thousands of homes in Tewkesbury can now sign up for a YouFibre package, which delivers gigabit speeds for just £45 p/m.
The company is currently offering an incredible six months’ worth of free internet to every new customer. You’ll never see BT or Virgin doing that.
