10Gbps XGS-PON technology on all CityFibres networks from April 2023
10Gbps XGS-PON access technology will be standard across all CityFibres networks from April 2023 in partnership with market-leading providers Calix and Nokia. The first XGS-PON customer connections are already operational in York, following the completion of the largest full-city network upgrade of its kind in the UK. Deployment program enables deployment of up to 10Gbps symmetrical broadband services for homes and businesses Platform will begin standard deployment of XGS-PON access technology from April 2023.
This will enable the introduction of residential and business services at symmetric speeds of up to 10 Gbps, which is approximately 10 times the capacity of CityFibre’s current G-PON-based architecture. XGS-PON will allow CityFibre to serve more customers at each to support OLT port, which can save significant network costs thereby reducing power consumption in its networks and improving the efficiency of its future network expansion.
CityFibre has selected market-leading providers Calix and Nokia as its XGS-PON technology partners. Calix has been a CityFibres G-PON technology partner since 2018 and plays a fundamental role in the development of the CityFibres full fiber network. Meanwhile, Nokia has been providing critical support to CityFibres’ service aggregation platform since 2016. These two trusted partners will ensure that supply chain diversity is an essential part of any critical national infrastructure deployment.
CityFibres’ existing G-PON network was designed to allow for a quick future upgrade to XGS. PON. A smooth upgrade path for this has now been demonstrated by the successful completion of a pilot city-wide G-PON to XGS-PON technology upgrade in York, which represents the largest of its kind in the UK to date. The York upgrade was conducted in partnership with Calix, LambdaNetworks and Splice Group. The purpose of the pilot was to assess and address all technical, process and customer challenges in upgrading live network.
The first customers have now been connected to the new platform with almost perfect optical test results. The successful outcome enables CityFibre to work with its ISP partners to upgrade retail ONTs in future phases, thereby minimizing the impact of network upgrades on the service experience.
CityFibre is committed to building a Complete Fiber Optic Network that is Better By Design, providing its partners and customers with the fastest, most reliable services at the best price. By partnering with Calix and Nokia, CityFibre now have two trusted and market-leading technology providers underpinning a nationwide 10Gbps XGS PON technology deployment program
